Examples and ideas

  • a hill depicted in a painting
  • a heritage site with mill pond, watermill and weir
  • a forest described in a book
  • a former mining area with rare plants

This is basically the same concept as Place Spore, except this idea has more of a focus on nature and the other was more focused on buildings. Maybe we should just merge Place Spore here, Geo Spore is a more universal name anyway.--Pharos (talk) 20:05, 1 January 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, I think Geo Spore can be used to describe both natural and cultural objects and landscape elements "between" nature and culture. --ChristianSW (talk) 23:22, 1 January 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ah, and I see now "Place" has a much broader meaning in English than the cognate in other languages. All the more reason to use Greek/Latin roots!--Pharos (talk) 00:16, 2 January 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What3Words / WhatFreeWords?

Could GeoSpore somehow use a geocoding system like "What3Words" or "WhatFreeWords"? --A12n (talk) 03:43, 10 February 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Good idea! I would like have a geo-template in wikispore, linking to geohack like in the wikipedias. --ChristianSW (talk) 13:16, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Check-in for Wikimedia users?

One possible application could be maybe a Check-in for Wikimedia users that want to associate with specific entry Geo Spore... Not sure how to do it but would be nice to consider for sights and resources of special relevance for affinity groups. --Zblace (talk) 11:55, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This feature could also serve as an equivalent to the Special:Nearby feature for pages https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Nearby , but should be made with considerations of flexible privacy of user data. --Zblace (talk) 06:40, 31 July 2020 (UTC) updated Zblace (talk) 07:04, 2 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

When to Translate?

When could we aim to have this page ready to translate? I would love if possible soon...--Zblace (talk) 09:39, 28 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Just add the translation tags, and I'll be glad to "turn on" translation.--Pharos (talk) 04:06, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

WikiMiniAtlas developer is back at it...

I just saw that WikiMiniAtlas developer is back at it... https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:WikiMiniAtlas#I'm_working_on_this_again

Would love to use it here. Zblace (talk) 13:49, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, it would be great! --ChristianSW (talk) 15:38, 3 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree!--Pharos (talk) 02:15, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

StreetView

Can we please also have a street view project? The popular w:Mapillary was bought by Facebook in June 2020 :( [1]. Other Street view services are not perfect; needs a WikiStreetView project Vis M (talk) 21:33, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
Or collaborate with w:KartaView (formerly known as openstreetview)? Vis M (talk) 04:03, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Vis M: I like your idea! Do you think it could be part of Geo Spore or a new Spore? I think I would like to use Geo Spore to describe entities like streets/junctions/... with Wikidata links. How can we make a WikiStreetView project of it - in combination with commons / structured data on commons? --ChristianSW (talk) 12:47, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Now I want to do all the streets and junctions in my neighborhood, with links from Wikidata, and street views from Commons!--Pharos (talk) 13:28, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It's so great to have Wikispore to work out new ideas! --ChristianSW (talk) 14:30, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And what about integrating the Tavel Video Spore ideas into Geo Spore - to enrich the Geo Spore with different types of content? --ChristianSW (talk) 17:41, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

WikiMap features

I found some notes with great examples about WikiMap for geolocated media. I think that WikiMap is the tool that I had been looking for. It would be great to have the w:Template:Coord here in Wikispore to enrich Wikispore leaves with geodata and display them directly on a map. --ChristianSW (talk) 14:22, 25 September 2022 (UTC) ...than, similar to the WikiMap-functions for Wikipages or Commonscats, we can show all geolocations from one Wikispore leave on a map, or we can show several geolocated Wikispore leaves together on one map. --ChristianSW (talk) 18:53, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for this, I'm never quite sure which map extension is best, but we certainly want to incorporate a software solution into Wikisprout that's as good as WikiMap or better,--Pharos (talk) 19:04, 1 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For the future I would like to be able to display or embed (geo)data directly. For example, I like this Wikivoyage page. --ChristianSW (talk) 19:48, 1 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Can we try to formulate in next weeks what are all the Mapping features we would like to see for use on Wikispore and together prioritize them so we can plan research *(what choices are there), development *(in none) and deployment *(if available)? Is it best to do this on Phabricator? Using kanban boards? --Zblace (talk) 07:13, 2 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, I wanted to suggest that too. Please let us also use a Wikispore page for this at the same time - and link to Phabricator from there, for example. For example, I think that in Wikispore we can use different (geo)extensions - not all on one page, but depending on the topic. Implementing existing Wikimedia features is also likely to be less technically difficult. --ChristianSW (talk) 07:31, 2 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Odd linking behavior

For some reason [[2]] doesn't work, while Bio:Josie Fanon does. I guess there must be some sort of shortcut associated with "Geo:"? Pharos (talk) 15:52, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
