Wikimedia Europe is a new (2022) coalition of European Wikimedia affiliates. Wikimedia Europe does or will focus on EU public policy and advocatcy. It derived from a longtime Wikimedia coalition called FKAGEU (Free Knowledge Advocacy Group of the European Union), which was less formal, and was sponsored by WMDE with support from 9 other chapters.[1]
Wikimedia Europe has two staff people. The six board members are generally affiliated with Wikimedia chapters.[1]
Wikimedia Europe is legally an international association incorporated in Belgium, with at least 22 Wikimedia affiliates are members. International associations are a distinctive category under Belgian law designed to support cross-European efforts. The members are organizations, not individuals, and there are an exact list of members; it is not a flexible support network for whoever is around. On meta it is called an "INGO". The legal incorporation may be done as of this writing.[1][2]
It is said that Wikimedia Europe will do only policy for two years then perhaps branch out to other cross-European activities.
In the future Wikimedia Europe could become increasingly formalized as a Wikimedia Hub, and develop fundraising by grants and contracts from EU bodies and assist knowledge exchange through Wikimedia and among Wikimedians. It is not exactly a Hub right now.[1][3]
Possibly WEAC is also an ancestor: https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_European_Affiliates_Cooperation
