Previous attempt
There was a wiki attempt a while ago: Andrew Lih wants to wikify fact-checking --Tgr (talk) 20:36, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, @Tgr, for posting this. I followed your link to Niemanlab. Since I have never heard this name before I googled it and found out that its wikipedia entry does not show up on google unless you specifically enter "nieman lab wikipedia" as a search criteria. Where would the statements come from?
Where would the statements to be fact-checked come from? I'm wondering if it would make sense to nominate Fact Spore for Growing seasons, which I think would require some way to come up with a list of new pages to work on. --Tgr (talk) 05:53, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Tgr: As to specific statements to fact-check, I guess we could either !vote on topics, extract from Wikipedia discussions, and/or draw from some of the more prominent statements, either globally, or in a particular geography or topical area. I agree Growing seasons may be a good opportunity to germinate this concept.--Pharos (talk) 15:01, 19 August 2021 (UTC)
Value proposition
What would be the value proposition of this project? Why is it better to do it on a wiki than leaving it to the various existing fact-checking organizations? Fact-checking seems like a well-populated space. (I have opinions but curious what others think.) --Tgr (talk) 06:00, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
- In my experience, we already do a lot of fact-checking on Wikipedia and other projects, on many reams of talk pages, and overall we do it rather well. This would in a sense just be surfacing a layer of work that has been ongoing for many years, but that has not been highlighted as such to the general public. The professional fact-checkers at journalistic outlets can only evaluate so many claims, and although there are other fact-checking-adjacent efforts that are crowdsourced, I think only the Wikimedia community could credibly claim to be a global NPOV crowdsourced effort in this space.--Pharos (talk) 14:04, 19 August 2021 (UTC)
