Queens are women who have ruled as sovereigns over a territory or a state. They include queens regnant, empresses regnant, princesses regnant, sultanas, pharaohs and other titles.[1] Female monarchs have existed throughout history in various regions and cultures. Some of the most famous female rulers of the ancient world are Cleopatra of Egypt, Sobekneferu of Egypt, Nefertiti of Egypt, Theodora of Byzantium, Hatshepsut of Egypt, Merneith of Egypt, Wu Zetian of China and Olga of Kiev.[2] Some of the most influential female rulers in modern history are Elizabeth I of England, Catherine the Great of Russia, Maria Theresa of Austria, Victoria of Britain, Isabella I of Spain and Elizabeth II of Britain.[3]
