Wikimedia Enterprise is a for-profit subsidiary of the WMF, oriented toward offering Wikimedia content and services to businesses.

The basic service is a high-bandwidth pipeline of edits to Wikimedia to Big AI companies, which use it as training data. Those customers (presumably google, amazon, apple, Internet Archive, etc) pay Wikimedia Enterprise and the funds are then available to the foundation.

Technology

The implementation of this service uses the Apache Kafka software and Amazon's S3 platform; they are avoiding using Amazon-specific tools such as "firehose" in order to remain flexible and cloud-vendor-agnostic so as to be able to switch suppliers. The implentation is said to use an "action" API not a "REST API".[1]

So far as we know, Wikimedia Enterprise is not involved generally in the use of MediaWiki by outside organizations, although there is a recurring idea that WMF could somehow offer Mediawiki support to organizations using Mediawiki. There is demand for this. Usually it is addressed by
