Creative Commons (CC) develops copyright licenses that help sustain free or near-free content. They run a global network of legal-minded chapters and affiliates to translate, adapt, and develop these licenses. Wikimedians have often partnered with CC and its affiliates, and the networks are somewhat parallel.
Licenses
CC licenses vary from the straightforward "public domain" concept or the free-software GNU and MIT licenses in a variety of ways such as these:
- Whether the user can apply the copyrighted content to a commercial purpose
- Whether the licensee is required to give credit to the source of the copyrighted item.
Networks of partners
CC started in 2001 in the U.S., and its first international partner organizations were to translate/transport the licenses to other countries.[1]
