Multimedia Institute is a non-profit association founded in 1999 and working at the intersections of culture, arts, technology and activism.

Since founding in 1999 it was organized around a multi-facetted community that weaves together interests in diverse cultural and social fields: 1) critically inflected digital arts, film, music and literature; 2) digital commons: free software, free culture and open access; 3) philosophy and theory; 4) cultural networking, advocacy and grass-root organizing; 5) protection of public domain and struggles for spatial justice. Locally it was mostly identified with the social and cultural center MaMa (than: net.culture club) in Zagreb, where it’s organizing cultural, educational and technology programs, hosting a local hacker community and cultural initiatives. It is the co-organizer of Human Rights Film Festival, doing electronic music events, publishing activities and the Croatian localizer of Creative Commons licenses.

Networking of organizations, initiatives and institutions, grass-root participation, cultural advocacy and promoting discourses around the commons, but also leftist thought, feminism and contemporary art practices in Croatia and the region are the key aspects of its identity.

Locally it is mostly identified with the social and cultural center MaMa (initially as: net.culture club) in Zagreb, where it’s organizing cutting-edge cultural, educational and technology programs, hosting a local hacker community and providing an open venue for other cultural initiatives. But it is also the co-organizer of Human Rights Film Festival, electronic music events, publishing activities and the Croatian localizer of Creative Commons licenses.

Most of those titles are otherwise unavailable in Croatian public libraries so initially we have set out the goal for our Media archive to support locally both academic and non-academic research work, but also artistic and activist practices. Media.archive consists of 2000+ volumes (books, journals, electronic media).Dominant topics covered are:– new media art & theory– social theory and philosophy– activism –gender & queer studies– new technologies– NGOs– digital political economy and intellectual property rights issues– cultural policy– urbanism
